Illustration: How Do You Store Your Weekly Injection Pen in Summer Heat?
Keep unused pens in the fridge, protect them from sun and heat, and follow the temperature and time limits in your medicine's leaflet. A practical summer guide.

Keep unused injection pens in the fridge at 2 to 8°C, and never freeze them. Outside the fridge, the official labels for medicines such as Mounjaro and Ozempic allow no more than 30°C, and only for a set number of days. A Saudi summer can push a car or a bag well past that limit, so your medicine's leaflet is always your first reference.

Why does heat matter for an injection pen?

Weekly injections are solutions that are sensitive to heat and light. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) warns that high summer temperatures may change a medicine's chemical properties and affect how well it works. It adds that the risk is higher when medicines are carried while travelling or left in bags in hot places.

That is why every leaflet sets clear limits: the allowed temperature, the longest time out of the fridge, and what to avoid, such as freezing and direct sunlight.

What fridge temperature is right for the pen?

The official labels agree: store new, unused pens in the fridge at 2 to 8°C. Common instructions include:

  • Do not put the pen in the freezer, and do not use it if it has been frozen, even after it thaws.
  • Do not store it right next to the fridge's cooling element, as the Ozempic label states.
  • Keep it in its original carton to protect it from light.

What matters is that the pen always stays within the range in its leaflet.

How long can the pen stay out of the fridge?

It depends on the medicine, the pen type and the country, so read the leaflet in your box. Two examples from the official US labels:

Medicine and pen type Out of the fridge, per the label
Mounjaro, single-dose pen Up to 21 days at no more than 30°C
Ozempic, pen after first use 56 days at 15 to 30°C, or in the fridge

The Ozempic label also says an in-use pen should be thrown away after 56 days even if medicine is left, and suggests writing the disposal date on your calendar. Multi-dose pens of other medicines may have different limits, so ask your pharmacist about your specific pen.

Notice that the limit in both examples is 30°C, so do not assume summer "room temperature" is safe when the air conditioning is off.

How do you protect the pen in the car and on the go?

A car parked in the sun is a hot place that does not suit medicine. A few simple steps help:

  • Do not leave the pen in the car or its boot, even for a few minutes.
  • Carry it with you in an insulated pouch or a small cool bag.
  • Do not let the pen touch ice packs directly, because freezing damages it too. Put a cloth or a divider between them.
  • Keep the pen cap on, and keep the pen in its carton away from the sun.
  • Remove the needle after each injection; the Ozempic label says to store the pen without a needle attached.

The SFDA also advises keeping medicines away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity, and following the manufacturer's or pharmacist's instructions.

What should you do if the pen got too hot or froze?

Do not judge the pen's condition on your own. Follow these steps:

  1. Check the solution through the pen window and compare it with the description in the leaflet. The Ozempic label, for example, describes it as clear and colourless.
  2. If the pen froze, the labels are clear: do not use it.
  3. If it was kept above the leaflet's limit, or you are not sure for how long, call your pharmacist or doctor before your next injection.
  4. Do not decide on your own to delay or move an injection. Ask your doctor or pharmacist what fits your situation.

It helps to add a note to that injection in Nemati about any heat exposure, so you can show your pharmacist or doctor the exact date.

Where should you keep the pen at home in summer?

The SFDA notes that bathroom shelves, kitchens, wardrobes and places under lights are not good spots for medicines, because they can be damp or warm. If your pen is one that may be kept out of the fridge, choose a cool, dry, dark place, and write on the carton the date you took it out so you do not go past the limit.

If the power is out for a long time or the fridge breaks down, ask your pharmacist whether your pens are still usable before you inject.

What should you ask the pharmacist when you pick up the pen?

Pickup is a good moment to learn the rules for your specific pen. A few short questions help:

  • How many days can this pen stay out of the fridge, and what is the highest temperature allowed?
  • Does that time start when it leaves the fridge or at first use?
  • How should I carry it home on a hot day?
  • What should the solution look like, and when should I not use the pen?

Write the answers down somewhere you can find them, in case you need them on a trip or during a power cut.
